Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was in her university. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of the home of a juror. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right out of high school. From this position she started her own PR company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
